disc settings questions
Posted by Fred@nonono.com on December 17th, 2006

I have a drawer system to make use of old hard drives to archive data, but one
drive has a problem - my new machine tries to boot it! It won't because that
partition is now empty, but I don't want it to boot anyway.

My older machine doesn't have this problem, and when I install the drive in it,
it sets it as disk "0" letter "g" or something... no problems... but I notice
it is marked as "active"... and the main drive is marked "system"... this is
always drive "C" but comes up as disc "1" with the other drive installed... all
the other drives and partitions have no designation.

questions:

Why is that drive "active" when other drives in the machine aren't?

Can I get rid of the "active" status and use this drive on the other machine
without problems?

The new machine is XP Pro and the old machine is XP Home.

Thanks

Boot with it and run fdisk, remove the active bit from that drive.
