- Display Color Problem
- Posted by Max Smart on November 3rd, 2003
My monitor colors just became distorted - there's a large bright green
dot in the center that blends to magenta near the edges, then back to
green in the corners. I've tried rebooting several times, blowing the
dust out of the case, and last tried reseating the video card. Nothing
helped.
Ahhh! While typing this message it went back to normal! This happened
once before, but a reboot fixed the problem. I keep the drivers up to
date at the Windows Update website. There are no warning icons in Device
Manager. The troubleshoot utility wasn't helpful. The monitor manual was
even less helpful. I don't know what else to check.
Is something getting ready to fail? It's not broken now - should I not
worry about it? I'm using WinXP-HE, RIC 3225 monitor, NVIDIA GeForce2 MX
200 Display Adapter. I'm not sure what other info is pertinent to the
issue.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Max

Sounds to me like you've got a strong magnetic field real close to your
monitor. Some speakers maybe. Could the fact that it cleared up suddenly be
linked to you perhaps having turned the power off to the speakers? Maybe
there's a big electric motor on the other side of the wall your computer is
up against. Check for stuff like that. Try your monitor on the other side of
the room.

Hello,
Considering this is an intermittent problem I would check the following:
1. The Monitor itself, check the cable connection to the video card and
reseat as necessary
2. Check the power cord to the monitor, wiggle the cable back and forth and
see if there are any intermittent
shorts or opens.
2. Switch to a known good monitor and see it the problem is still there. If
not replace the monitor.
3. Monitors are usually good for 2-5 years and then they progressively die,
or worse yet just cease to function.
4. The last item to check is the video card itself.. I doubt if it is the
video drivers. Rather than using Windows Update for new drivers, go to the
manufacturers web site, download the install the latest drivers for your
operating system.
My best guess is it is the Monitor that is going south. I am running two
computers and my Monitor went south last year. I have gone on
numerous service calls and took a known good monitor with me. In each case
it was a malfunction in the Monitor.

99% chance it is the monitor here. Does your monitor have deguass on
it? Next time just try that.

How old is the monitor - often the month/year is on the case
somewhere. Could be near it's use-by?
Try booting to DOS wit a start up diskette and running a DOS program
with colour - this might tell you if Windows is involved in the
problem.

Yeah! It's probably the monitor - it's pretty old.
Thanks
