downloads stop short
Posted by Jordan on March 12th, 2008

Ever since adding some plug-ins to Firefox browser, I've had problems
with biggish downloads (over 1MB). They usually start OK, but just stop,
usually after more than half way through. The plug-ins are mostly
web-design related, and a download helper. Occasionally I can get one to
complete.
I can't find any settings to change. Anybody know what's up?

I would start by un-installing this 'download helper.' You say you have
trouble after adding some extensions, so remove them and see what
happens.

How about you name, and provide a URL, to this download helper?

"download helper"..... And what exactly is that supposed to do?
Does it double your connection speed, of course not. Will it liven
up a site that is being swamped and mirror servers are slow -
impossible!
Is it one of those silly tools that claims it will resume a download
if the connection is lost, but thats what buffers and cache are for.
Disable the dubious "download helper".
Downloads not completing:
Your anti-virus software maybe struggling to perform scans on
the downloading files. Your firewall may also play a part in
downloads not completing.
The sites servers may be overloaded with subscribers - try a
different time of day, are you downloading music files at time
when schoolkids have just got home, or is it porn downloads
late at night, whatever the type of downloads try at a different
time of day when the usual subscribers to whatever the sites,
are not overloading it.
Is it P2P file sharing, then you are the mercy of the connection
speed and efficency of the user whose files you're accessing.

That's what I may have to do, but I'd like to be able to capture YouTube
etc videos.

Hmmph. I am not so sure I would want to use that product. Coupla
reasons.
There is a link to "Best adult sites" in the left column.
Most legitimate extensions are found referenced at the Firefox site.
This one won't let me download because I have Adblock installed,
and the page is filled with Google ads.

The guy may be ok, but his business model sucks. <g>

Another point: you seem to have your quoting mis-set in Thunderbird.
When you reply, the previous text should be delimited with ">"
characters. Could you look into that, please?

For youtube downloads, use dedicated tools:

This is an online convertor, you type in the YouTube clip's URL
this converts it online then you download the converted file:
http://vixy.net/

Or this excellent freeware version of save2pc
http://www.save2pc.com/
The site includes tutorial.

Jordan typed:
Remove the download helper ... it doesn't.

Are you downloading torrents? If so you need to leave them running when
downloaded so you re-seed them. If you continually cut them short
eventually your score will be so high you won't get any downloads at all.
