The driver for this card wasn't listed there

Um, yes, it is. Follow the links... The CT481x series is a Soundblaster
16 PCI.

(Soundblaster>Others>16 PCI>English>Win 98>Driver)

It's the same driver for 98 and 98SE anyway.

Ta. Well all I had was the CT ref didn't know it was a 16 PCI - will go
there again!

Navigating to the proper driver on Creative's site can sometimes get a
little confusing. :-)

have an applet that was supposed to identify the card in your PC. It missed
more than it got in my case. I don't know if it's still there or not - I
won't bother with it.

Despite successfully installing the driver (and Windows realising there was
new hardware) when I clicked on a music file I got the error message:
"MMSYSTEM002 A device Id has been used that is out of range of your system".
Winamp says no sound devices found and I should buy a sound card! Same from
other players - no hardware or hardware not responding - now what?!

Just tried uninstalling the hardware from control panel - rebooted -
computer found hardware and located software but still same problem. Will
the onboard card presence cause a problem? How do I disable this (I am told
in BIOS)

Yes, in the BIOS. If there is onboard sound there will be an entry there in
"Integrated Peripherals" or somesuch, and you'll have to disable it there for an
add-in card to work properly.

As Mara says, look in the BIOS. On older MBs there may be a jumper that
has to be changed. I had some old Super Socket 7 boards that were like
that.

I've still got two ASUS P5As, stuck in cases, bare-bones (no sound
cards, floppys, or CD-ROMs,333 mHz AMDs, 96MB RAM, 6 gig HDDs, and ISA
10 Mb NICs). All they do is sit there and run some BOINC apps. They're
not speed demons, but they keep on pluggin' along, uploading completed
work units, and getting new work as needed.

I've got a couple of old A7V133s, besides the G2. One of them is running an 1gig
XP box, 768meg of RAM. The only problem I've run into is my own memory - I have
to change the jumper if I want to run IDE instead of RAID, and the last time I
did it, it had been so long since I'd been in the case I forgot to do it at all,
which led to some interesting minutes before I remembered. LOL It's still
running a pair of old IBM hdds as a RAID, and still chugging along after all
this time.

Now all I need to do is find a network cable for the old Apple I was given a
couple of weeks ago....
