Do UK ISP's have any restricion on using your own hardware as opposed to the
'kit' they insist on selling as part of the package ?
As expected, after emailing 6, no replies :-(

With NTL, you can either hire the kit, or buy it off them.
I don't think there are any restrictions, except that if there is any type of
problem they will always blame "your" equipment, and will try to escape any
responsibility.

Are ISP's feminine ? ;-)

Pipex and bt both offer a "line only" service. Got ours at work a week ago.

And who says that it's always illegal?
If you have a damaged software cd and a valid licence, you can download a copy
of that software without it being illegal.
If you have an album (vinyl), cassette or even music cd, but not the software to
copy the tracks, you can download an mp3 without it being illegal.

Since the service you're most likely talking about is the Wires Only then
the answer is no. You can use any DSL hardware you like as long as it is
properly CE certified. For more information including some hardware
reviews I would suggest www.adslguide.org.uk.

It all depends on your ADSL ISP, go to www.adslguide.org for the full low
down though

£29 signup/connection, 3-month contracts for £22.50 or £30 a month for 50:1
and 20:1. And free upgrade to their 1meg and 2 meg serviced being offered in
August with the same ratios. Think I will have to sort it out soon...:-)
