- Dual boot, XPPro/W98SE
- Posted by claw on July 11th, 2004
Running XP/ trying to run 98SE.
I have two aggravating problems attempting to install and
use 98SE in a dual boot situation.
2 HD's, 15g in one partition, 30g in 3 partitions. C: is XP. on the 15G.
I install 98 into a clean partition, all goes well - except - the PC will
shut down and immediately reboot without any rhyme or reason, at no
particular instance, in the middle of no particular operation. (thought
about the utility in XP where the 'reboot on errors' was checked but it is
not) This after 98 has been successfully installed. Shutdown and
reboot does not occur when using XP Pro and obviously internet is OK.
My second problem is installing my cable internet modem, a Motorola
SB4200 to use with W98. I have tried everything without success,
reinstalling usb drivers for the MB and have went through the instruction
manual until memorized but still no install.
I know there are some who will wonder why the hell I bother with a
duel boot but I hope you experts will humor me, I'm old man and my
PC is sort of a toy to help me pass the days rather than sitting on the
front porch waving at life passing me by.

Windows 98 should be installed before XP, and
the boot volume (C
must be FAT32. Installing
Windows 98 after XP can cause some important
system files to be overwritten. From Microsoft:
"You will be less likely to encounter problems installing
a multiple-boot system with MS-DOS, Windows 95 or
Windows 98, and Windows XP if you install these
operating systems in the following order: MS-DOS,
Windows 95 or Windows 98, and then Windows XP."
