- Dual booting Mandriva 2007 and Ubuntu
- Posted by Aardvark on February 24th, 2007
Running Mandriva 2007 on a PC with two HD's in a total of six
partitions as follows:
hda1 mount point '/'
hda6 mount point '/home'
hdb1 mount point '/var/www
hdb5
hdb6
hdb7
All are ext3 FS. I have created a Linux swap partition between
hda6 and hda7, with the intention of installing Ubuntu 6.06 on
hda6.
Grub is installed at /dev/hda1.
I don't want to fuck up my Mandriva installation (even with backup
it'd be a pain to fix it if nothing else). And I'd be pretty pissed
off.
I want hdb6 to mount at '/' in Ubuntu and hdb7 to mount at probably
'/home'. Having already tried to install Ubuntu, I keep getting
stuck after manual partitioning when I try to set my mount points.
If I try to set them as above, the installer tells me that I've
made a mistake as I have to set a mount point for '/'. can't quite
get my head round this as I'm telling it that I want hdb6 as '/'.
So what's the problem? Where am I going wrong?
Also will Ubuntu re-write GRUB without deleting my entries for
Mandriva or will I have to manually edit?

Then, where are all those other partitions, and where is your swap file?

So install it. Don't install grub when asked. Set /home in Ubuntu to sda6
during the install. Edit your grub.config file to reflect your changes.
Your Mandriva CD 1 / DVD can reinstall your bootloader if things get
messy.

I'm not sure what you mean be that; do you mean that hda7 is a linux swap
partition and that you have hda8?
OK, in principle.
So you have a boot manager in the MBR of hda. Or is that really where you
have Mandriva's boot loader? This makes a difference. (I use GAG as a
boot manager, and put the boot loader for each installed OS in its own /
or /boot partition).
These Ubuntu questions are probably best asked in a Ubuntu newsgroup - and
Mandriva questions in a Mandriva newsgroup. I use Mandriva. I'm not
familiar with Ubuntu, but I think I may have read that its installation
routine is aimed at Linux newbies who have neither the need nor the
knowledge to over-ride whatever Ubuntu's default set-up is. That may have
been achieved by removing or disabling some of the features of the Debian
installer (Ubuntu being a derivative of Debian).

I reduced the size of hda6 by 1GB and created a swap partition in that
space. Hence 'between hda6 and hda7'.
I checked in MCC to make sure where GRUB was installed. MCC says /dev/hda1
but I'm not too sure if it's in the MBR or not. I seem to remember when
installing Mdv 2007 that there was a choice.
Well ahead of you. I asked the same question in alt.os.linux.mandriva and
intended to do the same in alt.os.linux.ubuntu but for some reason Pan
doesn't want to download aolu's headers so I only have an empty newsgroup
where they should be :-(. Of course I placed my question here just to see
if I could get another take on it.
Ubuntu does have a default setup that makes its bootloader take over
everything apparently but there is an option to manually set up and
partition the OS. Which I've been trying to do. That's where I get stuck
and I don't want to take any chances on Ubuntu overwriting my bootloader
so I don't have to go fucking about with it to fix my Mandriva system. I'm
still relatively new to Linux and like to stay in my comfort zone for the
moment.
Cheers Whiskers.

The MBR of the primary hard drive would be shown as /dev/hda

Perhaps your news-server hasn't got the Ubuntu group set up properly and
peering with other servers that have articles for it; it is a very recent
group. Contact your NSP. (I notice that Google Groups don't list it at
all). The Debian groups might be able to help you.
