"BWAHAHAHAHAHA"
You have to buy M$ office if you want a full set of programs

You can buy a few different word processing programs or try something
like this.
http://www.openoffice.org/
Anyone used this before? I haven't, but it looks interesting.

As others have indicated, wordprocessing (or spreadsheets, etc.) is not part
of Windows (not in XP, but also not part of previous versions). I am a
confirmed WordPerfect user. Many use Word, or you might even want to buy an
inexpensive standalone word processor. You could search for freeware or
shareware through www.tucows.com.

Try Open Office

Or, for just a word processor:

Somehow i doubt that this type of 'new' user will want to be playing around
with Star or Open office

Why not? Besides, there are plain word processors available, too.

Yep. Go to http://www.openoffice.org and download OpenOffice.ORG
1.0.3.1 (or first go to http://java.sun.com and get the Java Runtime
Environment, then download OpenOffice.ORG 1.1RC3).
Or, go to www.software602.com and download the PCSuite from them.
Or Google for "Office Suite Download" and see what else is out
there.
I personally prefer OOO's suite. Impress (the drawing program) is a
VERY competent program, and OpenOffice Write and OpenOffice Calc both do
very good.

Yes, I have. I've even gotten a few customers up on it (a total of
over 100 installs, AAMOF). It's a good solid program. 1.1RC3 doesn't do
anything flaky, and it fixes some interface gotchas that tended to bug me.
1.1RC3, however, requires a Java Runtime for full operation. I've
been using the Sun JRE (http://java.sun.com) for my customers.

That would depend on what the vendor included with your computer. That is,
MS Works is not part of XP but it also was not part of Win 98. Many
computers do come with Works pre-installed, but (as another post mentioned)
that is an application while Win is the operating system.
