Email Abuse
Posted by ayesha on July 18th, 2003

Need your help please. It would seem that my email account has been
hijacked. A person using my address with the words SMPT followed by a
false name and my correct email address has been sending emails
containing viruses to organisations right around the world. 43 so
far. The organisations that received this stuff have sent it all back
to me at my correct address with queries as to what is this stuff etc.

I have two anti virus progs and these have detected nothing, plus a
paid for firewall.

I have contacted my ISP and asked them to look into it. No news so
far. How has this happened please and what can I do to stop it?

Thanks.

It sounds more like it is someone who has your address in their address book,
and they have the Klez virus.

Your account has not been hijacked, more than likely. Someone who had you in
their address book is probably infected with one of the newer worms. That's what
they do.

They wouldn't. The malware isn't on your machine.

Trace the originating IP in the headers of the original messages and complain to
the host they came from. Ask the host to tell their client to clean up their
machine, and ask them to clean up their network.
