- ERR: Bad Direct Sound Driver
- Posted by Luke O'Malley on October 25th, 2004
Hi!
I tried to play an MP3 back and no matter what player I use I get a
msg that there is a Bad Direct Sound Driver.
Systerm OS: XP Pro
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
When I check Control Panel --> Sound & Audio Devices it doesn't show
anything installed. I tried to reinstall my sound card but got a
lot of msgs such as:
Windows Installer
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource
that is unavailable" or
"Installshield engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched" or
"Bad Direct Sound Driver error code 88780078"
I had a problem installing a 16 bit program last week but I managed
to solve the problem with the assistance of some generous people on
this site. Everythins worked fine until tonight.
Goodwill,
Luke

Luke,
Perhaps the windows installer has cached bad data, or invalid paths... you
could try MS's Windows Installer Cleanup Utility which can be downloaded at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301
I would run it, reboot, then try uninstalling your current sound driver if
its listed in Add/Remove programs, then install the latest driver, hope this
helps.
