Ethernet Termination
Posted by JackC on August 15th, 2007

Hi,

I am just studying Ethernet networking, and have come across the topic
of Ethernet termination. From what i understand each end of a cable
has to be terminated with a terminating resistor to prevent signal
reflection down the cable which causes havoc with CSMA/CD and causes
constant phantom cable traffic.

Now, what i don't understand is when cable termination is required,
i.e specifically which topologies/situations it is required in.

As far as i can work out, cable termination is only required in a
physical bus topology for example 10Base5, is this correct?

I mean is there any kind of wire termination required in other
topologies, for example star-bus networks is there termination inside
the hub, or termination inside routers/switches e.t.c?

Thanks for clearing this up,

Jack

Also is there a more specific general networking usenet group?

It was getting boring for a while reposting and reposting and reposting
the lists of networking links.

Didn't I say that before?

Oh right I did

There have been several recent posts, reposting links to home networking
sites,
search http://groups.google.com/group/24hoursupport.helpdesk? just the
last 7
days for - home networking. (I took everyone's advice and ran the New
