- Ethernet/USB PCMCIA Card(combo)
- Posted by aretired on November 9th, 2003
My Dell Laptop 3700 USB port is broken. I would have to buy a new
motherboard/laptop.
I would like to find a PCMCIA card that would have a USB slot and
also at the same time
be a 10/100mbps with an rj45 adapter to connect my cable modem.
Is ther such thing on the market. If yes where can i buy it.
Second option, would be to have 2 pcmcia cards slim enough to fit
in the two side slots of my laptop.
One could be a USB pcmcia card(to replace my broken usb slot) and
the second could be the ethernet 10/100 mbps.
They would have to be very thin.
Your help in finding a replacement would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

There are so many places to choose from for cards and accessories, a few
found on www.google.com

Should be much easier, with 2 cards.

You mean the 'card' or more likely cards without cables, using an
external block hanging on the end of the card.
Check your product info on the dell support site. The 3700 has 2 3.3/5V
cardbus slots. I was asked to create an account to access other
configuraion specs, that you can do.

Yes, there are 2 cardbus slots.
The problem is to find two cards that would fit into these 2 slots
and offer me usb ports and the ethernet card(10/100mbps).
Usually the usb card is to thick to use and prevent the use of the
rj45 on the ethernet card.
Should be much easier, with 2 cards.(where can i find 2 cards that
would fit into those 2carbus slots)

Would they both fit together in the 2 cardbus slots and at the same
time be able to use the rj45 from the ethernet card.

Ah, right it appears the USB is 2 or 4 connectors like
http://www.orangemicro.com/OrangeUSBCardBus.html
looks like it's simply due to the size of the USB connector.
I think it's your turn to start hunting around search sites. You may
even find asking some PC Card product developers. Maybe somebody has a
half length slot extender. I don't know.

In fact another few minutes searching turned up this

on the same site.

Someone recommended a wireless router that could receive the cable
modem with an rj45 or usb connector
and the wirless device would be connected to the usb 2.0 pcmcia
card on the laptop.
Could this be a third options.
Thanks

Sounds, okay so far. Cable modem to router (with 4 RJ45 ports/wireless).
It's 2 PCs you need networked, incl the laptop?
With a 2/4 port USB card in the laptop. You get the USB port(s) for
device you need. Then it's a matter of wireless to USB, don't know an
option for that. Try hunting around some of the sites already mentioned.
Netgear has these
http://www.netgear.com/products/prod...ID=137&view=hm
http://www.netgear.com/products/prod...ID=148&view=hm
If you had a cable modem to router with a 4 port RJ45 connection, these
adapters (non wireless) looks like they convert a RJ45 cable to USB
cable.
So in this case, a solution looks like.
1. for more then 1 PC -
Get a router (depends on your cable modem connection, sounds like it's
RJ45) almost any of the Netgear / Linksys / Dlink (see previous URL's)
Get the 2/4 port USB PC Card already mentioned.
Get one of the Netgear adapters, to convert RJ45 to USB.
2. for only 1 PC, connect a netgear adapter between the cablemodem and
the USB card.
Can't say if this will work. Check the netgear site for the online
manuals, setup guides. On the main product info pages they usually have
typical connection example diagrams.
If you prefer a wireless router solution, Netgear also has wireless to
USB, (see I found one)
http://www.netgear.com/products/prod...ID=173&view=hm
So your solution would be , wireless/hardwired router , usb card for
laptop and usb-wireless network adapter.

Basically yes or something to convert Ethernet/wireless to USB.
No, usually 1-4 RJ45 ports and/or wireless connection.
See my previous post.
