External HD - Maxtor II not being seen by xp
Posted by bbb on April 17th, 2008

Hello,

I have a external hard drive that is not being picked up by XP.

It's plugged in and the power is on.

Windows explorer does not show the drive.

Under device manager/disk drives it IS showing... However, when I right
click on properties/general it tells me the device is working properly.
When I click on properties/volumes and choose 'populate' the disk and
type show as 'unknown', status 'unreadable', partition style 'not
applicable', capacity, unallocated space and reserved space all show as 0MB.

Can anyone help me with this please? I've investigated the maxtor site,
but i just end up chasing my tail.

continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if promontory were, as well as if a manor
of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for
whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Go into Disk Manager.

Run diskmgmt.msc via the run dialog on the start menu.

If the drive is formatted, give it a drive letter, otherwsie format it.

If you unplug the connection and plug it back in, does Windows pick up the USB
connection and show the drive in My Computer?

You have to first initialize the disk. Use the disk supplied by Maxtor
and follow the instructions.

I did the same thing once because I totally forgot about that part of
the process. Once I did that, it worked just fine.
