I am constantly getting messages from my AV and firewall program (Kaspersky) that files thunderbird.exe and firefox.exe files have been changed. And it asks me what to do. Any idea what to do?

If the pop ups are what are worrying, there would be an option similar
to "Remember my choice" which will prevent future requests. Enable
that.
If you are worried about infection, you should scan with an
alternative AV. There are many free AVs around - AVG, Avast etc.

Well Kaspaersky is one very efficient security tool, it will have
a help file and a support link. This support link has a direct access to
Kaspersky's knowledgebase, enter the exact wording of the alert and
check out what it says it means:

The executables of TB and FF that are being referenced, as they are
the executables that Kaspersky is dubious about I would follow it up
and check the Mozilla FAQ + Troubleshooter for known issues, click links
to left of screen:
