Internet Explorer is part of the operating system and is used for things
other than browsing the Web. For example, it is what displays HTML email
messages in your email/news client:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3028

Just stop using it. Set your personal firewall to alert when it starts
up, too. Then Deny its running unless you yourself started it.

Oh, and get better email and news clients.

No, it's still required to get quick windows updates.

Just don't use it.

There is a program called nlite that allows you to build a custom
installation of 2000 or XP, and IE can easily be left out. It's not for the
newbie.

No, as Beauregard said it's part of the OS. There are so many hooks into
DLLs , bits of IE. You just have to live with it. The other posters
mentioned several other reasons as well.

Glad to hear you are an expert on the subject. Actually, many nlite users
have removed IE quite successfully. You might learn that if you did some
research, but you're too busy trumpeting your knowledge to do any. Get
bent.

This applies to WIN98SE. Might not be the same for later versions. I don't
know.

If you're using OE for downloading binaries, you'll need IE's Internet
Options > Delete Files facility to remove all the rubbish that OE stores in
your Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder.

Entire large downloads and HTML versions of text messages you post to groups
end up duplicated as *.tmp and wbk????.TMP files in folders such as

C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\R0KD3CZV

and can quickly fill up a small HD.

These are not cleared via OE's own Cleanup facility, which only removes
stuff from your *.dbx files (or as OE calls them, folders).

The *.tmp and wbk????.TMP files files are normally hidden and what folders
you can see usually appear empty. To see what's there use Start > Find >
Files or Folders, enter *.* in the 'Named' field and browse to
C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files for 'Look in'.

It's handy to save this search and have a shortcut to it on the desktop.

You can also drag a shortcut to Internet Options onto your desktop from the
Control Panel.

Sure you want to do that? Any updates from Microsoft require Internet
