First you do an image of the drive to another h/drive.
Then you can erase or format the original.
So you`ve saved the OS, and wiped the drive.

Not sure exactly what you're trying to accomplish, but BCWipe will wipe
free space and slack space without harming software.

But why? :-)
The usual "reason" to wipe a (Windows) drive is malware or a corrupt
registry. Image/Format/Restore just gets you right back to where you
were.
As usual, if the OP had given more details, a better answer could be
found.

Are you talking about erasing files that you don't want anyone recovering ,
then use Glary Utilities
go to file shreader and select the wipe free space tab .
that should do a reasonable job

maybe the orig poster wanted to erase private data including so-called
deleted items, possibly before selling his computer
ccleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ can securely erase all temp
files by overwriting
other apparently unused parts of the hard drive can still contain
recoverable deleted files, and these areas can be overwritten using
the file undelete app Restoration from http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html
both progs are free
