FREE registry cleaner?
Posted by Sseadoubleyou on April 4th, 2005

Hey-

Can anyone recommend a excellent FREE windows registry cleaner. That is, is
there such a thing as a excellent free one or must one pay to get something
that is going to get the job done correctly the first time?

Thanks.

Registry cleaners are often dangerous, especially if they get too
agressive in tersm of what they select for cleaning.

I have had good success with RegSeeker (free) from
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html However it does often
take several passes before it finishes cleaning. I always run it
again if the current pass finds more than 20 items to be removed.

Make certain you have created a registry backup before you use any
registry cleaner, and also ensure that you know how to get your
computer up and running with the backup registry in place even if the
Registry Cleaner totally hoses things to the point where the computer
will not boot into Windows.

Good luck

What kind of question is that? Of course I do! When uninstalling programs,
among other things old files and stuff are not always removed from the
registry, stuff hangs there. I wanted to clean it out.

EasyCleaner is also quite popular. Effective and easy to use:

I'll add my cautions to others, though. Be very careful with
*anything* that effects your registry. Make sure that back-ups are made.
And be *particularly* careful with 'duplicate file finder' features.
Sometimes files of the same name need to exist in different areas.

It doesn't seem so.

Easy Cleaner works... Not perfect but I haven't had any problems with
it removing too much. I've tried others that wants to remove needed
entries.

Easy Cleaner does other things too, but I use it primarily for keeping
the registry relatively "clean".
