- Free up some Virtual Memory
- Posted by on November 28th, 2006
Can someone please help me to solve a problem I have regarding freeing-up
some of my computers Virtual Memory? I had to reformat my hard-drive and
reinstall Windows Home addition after suffering all sorts of problems and
error messages. My problem is, when I try to install (Palm Desktop Software)
I am being told, the program needs at least 3mb of Virtual Memory. I haven't
put any programs on my computer that I didn't have on it the last time; in
fact I still have a few programs yet to install. How can I see what is
taking up all of the computers Virtual Memory, and how do I increase it? I
am using Windows XP Home edition. My computer has got a 200gb hard drive and
1gb of ram. Thanks to all for any suggestions.

Not likely you've really got any virtual memory problems, more
likely you've just got some funky software incompatibilities.
Virtual Memory settings are accessed via System Properties...
Right-click your My Computer > Properties > Advanced tab >
Performance area > Settings button > Advanced tab.
You should be showing ~1500 MB in that field, but you can click
the Change button and adjust it for your C:\ or root, but I
wouldn't, especially in XP. I'd find some other software, or
look somewhere else for the actual problem. Perhaps re-download
a newer version, or something. But that's just me.
Best wishes to you and yours for a safe and joyous holiday
season.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if someday some fishermen
caught a big shark and cut it open, and there inside was a
whole person. Then they cut the person open, and inside him
is a little baby shark. And in the baby shark there is not a
person, because the baby shark would still be too small. But
there's a little doll or something, like a GI Joe or Barbie
little toy person - something like that. Then they cut the
toy person open, and there's the King Cake Baby Jesus doll.
Curses! I never get the free drink... Well, there's always
next year.

"Virtual memory" is another name for "swap space". I'm sure that Windows
XP has something about both terms in the "Help" that it probably has
hanging around somewhere.
