Freezing on start-up
Posted by Gerry on April 3rd, 2004

Hi all
Most of the time, when I have to reboot after a freeze or crash, the
computer does its usual scandisk routine and things go ok until it reaches
the stage where the icons should begin to appear on the desktop. That`s when
it often locks up, and it often takes another two or three attempts to get
things running ok again. All my critical updates are installed ok (thank you
Mike for your valuable help) and I`m not sure what the cause could be.
Anyone any ideas?
Thanks in anticipation
Gerry

Check to see that all the internal fans are working correctly and not
clogged or obstructed.
Reseat the memory, or try 1 stick at a time.
Leave the case cover off to see if it runs cooler and stops freezing.

You can also try this to see if it works:
Try lowering the "Hardware Accelerator" setting a notch or two.

Windows 9x:
Right-click "My Computer", "Performance" tab, Click "Graphics" button

Windows XP:
Right-click the desktop, select Properties. Click the "Settings" tab.
Click the "Advanced" button, click the "Troubleshoot" tab.

My temp is ok, it`s well within limits. I`ll work on the memory sticks
tomorrow
sometime. My hardware accelerator is already lowered by one notch so I`ll
wait till I`ve tried reseating the memory.
Thanks for your help
Gerry

It's certainly NOT overheating if things run OK after "two or three"

Sounds like a program in the startup group hanging.
Try disabling each program you have set to start when the computer boots
up one at a time to isolate the one causing the trouble.
