FTP permissions problem
Posted by Paul Eden on September 7th, 2003

Hi,
I need to delete a load of stuff from my ftp remote server. BlazeFTP , is
great for deleting big, deep directory trees.
But now I'm getting some permissions problems that I need help with.
When it's trying to delete files, the server gives the reply;
550: {filepath and name): Permission denied.
Aha! I thought, so I tried to CHMOD the files, but the server gives the
reply;
550 (filename): Operation not permitted.

Please help an amateur here. What's going on?

Thanks,

Paul

What is the server running? IIS? Something else? If IIS, are the
filenames valid characters/names for Windows? Are you logging in
anonymously or with a username/pw?

Ah my apologies, should have included that info
The server is running Linux. I'm logging on with the username and password
supplied by the hosting firm. Most other files in the dir I want to empty
have deleted, but there 11 dirs that wont, and give the above error.

OK. That helps a little. <G> My initial guess is that the
username/pw isn't right somehow. Either that, or your permissions are
not setup properly...

I ran into that same type of scenario with a couple of my servers. What I
end up doing is logging into my accounts 'CPanel' and usings its built in
file manager to delete the files, works perfectly then. So Thuder's theory
on certain permissions may be correct, I haven't dug into this much yet
myself to find out for sure. Good luck.

I am using the site administrators password, I did check. I also have a
CPanel, though this one is the Ensim equivalent and I got the following
message when I tried to delete from there, this might shed some more light
on the matter;
["rm: cannot unlink
`/var/www/html/phpBB2/modules/gallery/albums/album01/album.dat.lock:
Permission denied ",

Thanks ,

firm and they deleted the files for me, it's easier when you own the server!
Thanks for all your help.
