- Gateway laptop keyboard won't type all letters.
- Posted by TG on September 16th, 2007
I keep having to reinstall the keyboard drivers. The w,q,a,s, 2,3,
disappear very often. I then have to use the restoration disk and re
install the keyboard driver.
Some times it works and some times it doesn't, I generally have to keep
installing disk until it works.
What do I have to do to stop this nonsense?
TIA
Terry

You could however check your Event Viewer to see if you have
any software related problems/errors showing up.

Most likely your keyboard is failing. You can order a new keyboard from
the Gateway support, or maybe find a used one on eBay. If you get used
one, there may be other faults. My preference is for a new one.
When you install the new keyboard, if there are still any faults, this
means that the fault is in the motherboard. You will not know until you
can try a known working keyboard.

What different port would that be for his laptop's keyboard?

You're suggesting that a user of unknown technical ability/training
replace a laptop keyboard? *bad* idea. It needs to be taken in for
service period end of story.

Even those with known technical ability/training can be stymied by
laptop assembly/disassembly. Six of us had no luck removing a HD from a

Yeah. It's called "USB". Now where do you get the impression
that he wants *an external keyboard*?

laptop), you may rule out operating system corruption. Keyboard "drivers"
are most probably a non-issue, since they only supply configuration
settings for extra keys.
Your operating system may be corrupted by a (slightly malfunctioning)
keyloggger or trojans/viruses.
You should be able to uninstall the keyboard "drivers" and still have basic
functions with either internal or external keyboard.
Next try, to rule out mechanical failure, is to test your keyboard simply in
bios setup - you may only have password fields to enter letters, and you'll
see just asterisks if any - or with a live cd like knoppix.

Not really. The problem is in one of two places: the keyboard
itself, or the interface where the keyboard connects to the
motherboard. A USB keyboard wouldn't use that interface.

too small to have each number represented solely by a key--they then share a
"letter" key. Read your manual and find out how to enable all number-keys
and how to re-enable all letters. HTH, sam

No, but it will eliminate the keyboard as the source of the
problem. It's also more likely that the keyboard IS the source
of the problem, since it's the part that actually gets hit on all
day long. Also, keyboards are cheaper than motherboards. So
first you replace the keyboard, as that is the mostly likely
problem and the cheaper part. If THAT doesn't do it, THEN you
replace the keyboard, and now you have a fully functional system
again.
You always start with the most likely, and the cheapest of those.

The problem described as nothing to do with the built in "number
keypad" as that always involves the right hand side of the
keyboard, and his trouble keys are all on the left side.
It's most likely gunk in the keyboard. The correlation of the
letters are all touching, which leads me think there was a spill.
Or that area of the keyboard could be broken; an impact in that
area could cause that kind of failure.
I think the fact that it seems to improve after re-installing the
drivers is totally coincidental. A spill may soften after the
computer's been running, or a short-circuit due to a fracture can
sometimes connect anyway.
