Remote system: dns;gsmtp171.google.com (TCP|10.11.1.41|22843|64.233.171.27|25) (mx.gmail.com ESMTP 58si1872062rnc)

zip contained what file type?
zip was what sort of size?

www.google.com
Results 1 - 10 of about 214 English pages for smtp;552 Illegal
Attachment. (0.43 seconds)

Try the RFC for SMTP check the status codes
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2821.html

But it all depends on the SMTP version of the server and using standard
codes / messages, that's the ESMTP identifier. All you usually ca say is
code 5xx is a permanent failure.

Doesn't look like an issue there. As Brian mentioned try another format.

From Gmail's Help Centre:

"As a security measure to prevent potential viruses, Gmail does not allow
you to receive executable files (such as files ending in .exe) that could
contain damaging executable code."
"Gmail does not accept these types of files, even if they are sent in a
zipped (.zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz) format. If someone tries to send
this type of message to your Gmail account, the message will be bounced back
to the sender."
