Has anyone dis-assembled a wifi card?
Posted by Brian on April 17th, 2004

I have a dell inspiron notebook with a wireless g network card. It is a
PCMCIA card, my notebook doesnt have a mini pci slot for an internal card. I
was thinking: is there a way to disassemble the card? By this I mean,
seperate the silver part that slides in the slot from the black antenna that
sticks outside the computer, and then *stuff* the antenna guts inside the
computer, so I don't have the black thing sticking out the side, but rather
a makeshift internal wireless card?

Has anyone ever taken these apart? Any advice? I'd attempt it if some people
reply with positive advice, then again I may not want to have to buy a new
card if it doesn't work out.

any words?

If you put the antennae inside the case, you would almost
certainly reduce its ability to receive/transmit anything to
almost zero. Most laptops have metal sheilding to stop RF
emissions, your wifi card would have serious problem
communicating with anything ;-)

Why don't you consider getting a USB wireless adapter?

apart and put them back together again. I have had to do it because
users flex the card at the point where it exits the laptop, breaking
the internal tracks.

On the cards that I have opened there is electonics within the
"aerial" part, so it is not just a case of one or two connections back
to the rest of the card.

Thanks for the replies all. I will leave the card as it is!
