Help with FTP Client, a Proxy, and a Router
Posted by larrybud2002@yahoo.com on February 3rd, 2006

Hard to diagnose problem here:

Running Serv-U 5 for my FTP server
Have a Netgear router with port 20,21, and 2000-2010 forwarding to my
box with Serv-u
Running CuteFTP 6 for my Client at work (tried other clients as well)
At work, we go through a Socks 4 proxy

Ok, I can connect to my FTP server at home, but when I change
directories, I get a generic "Socks server reports: General Socks
Error" message in CuteFTP and other clients that I have tried.

I double click on the directory again, and I get the error again. But
the third time is the charm, and the directory changes.

If I try to change dir again, same thing happens, it fails on the first
two attempts, but works (usually) on the third. I can transfer files
fine.

I.E. works fine, but of course you can't tell what FTP commands are
going on in the background. I suppose it could be retrying, then
finally working.

The FTP server works fine when access through a non-proxy client, like
from a buddy's house or from one of the many web based FTP clients,
however, I can also FTP from work to a number of public FTP servers
without a problem. Any ideas?

Many users have problems using Cute to connect to my Serv-U v5.2 server.
If they use FlashFXP and use pasv mode it works fine.

Grab the trial and see if that works any better.

FlashFXP is a much better ftp client than Cute imho.
