HELP - i've been hijacked?!!
Posted by Cindy Stuart on June 22nd, 2005

i have the weirdest problem; i think i picked up a bug somewhere at a warez
site. i can't access my gmail account cindystuart@gmail.com
i also can't seem to get google which runs gmail. i get a screen that looks
like google but the searches aren't google searches. other times it just
says page not found when i go to google. i use ie6, and firefox. no other
problems accessing other sites. i have a fast p4 running xp pro. my avg and
adaware show nothing unusual. is there anyway to fix this.
if some techie wants to contact me, my other email works:
cindy013@netzero.net

someone help me please!
tia

Download, install, update and run all of the following.

Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot search and destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

If none of the above fixes the issue then download Hijack this, run it, save
a copy of the log file and cut and paste it back here to the group so that
it can be analyzed.

dear max,
thank you so much for your help which completely took care of the problem.
i went to the site http://home.neo.rr.com/manna4u/ what an informative
page! i d/l everthing there and ran it all.
hijackthis is the pgm that showed me the problem. after scanning, the log
file had several (hosts) entries containing some variant of the word google.
i took a chance and deleted all of those google hosts entries. walaaa - it
worked!! it seems that those entries were redirecting me to somewhere i
didn't want to be.
i'm now able to get onto the real google and access my gmail w/ no
problems - and i must have the cleanest pc with all the anti stuff i now
have.
if you weren't some faceless guy in cyberspace, i would bite you.
thanks again,
cindy
