When I click on some things I get an hourglass that doesnt go away.It stays
there for ages and I have to restart the computer?
How do I get rid of it?

If you go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse > Pointers > you
will see that the hour glass indicates that the computer is 'Busy'. To
interrupt it then may cause problems.

You could press Ctrl Alt and Delete, simultaneously, to see if a program
is not responding and if you find such a program use the 'End Task'
facility.

Thanks Emrys, it cant actually be busy though.
Its not really doing anything apart from showing this hourglass.I think it
might have crashed or seized up the hard disk.
How much do those cost?

When KDE does this, it's usually a permissions problem.

It seems that you want an excuse to get a new hard drive. Can you use
SATA drives? A 74 GB Western Digital Raptor at 10,000 RPM costs about
$250. The 7,200 RPM drives cost about $170 for 200 GB, less for the
regular EIDE drives.

Does it only get stuck on certain things?
Use ctrl-alt-del once to bring up the Close Program box and you might be able to
see what program is not responding.
Simply highlite it and then select End Task for that program and then post what
program is 'not responding'.

SATA is not fast enough? I like SCSI. You need an Ultra320 adapter
card to use it, but it's very fast. A 36.7 GB drive costs about $260
and a 73.4 GB drive costs about $580. If you want more speed, you need
a RAID configuration with these drives.

Read your other posts. Plus, how does "some people" equate to "female"? Got
a complex? Who's the sexist, here?

Have you tried the Ctrl Alt Delete and End Task which I mentioned?

Start your computer in Safe Mode and Scan and Defrag. it in that mode.

These are the basic things which you should be trying. Give it a go.

What makes you think that your hard drive is faulty?

Emrys Davies.
