- How can I add a Desktop shortcut to Win XP's Search Function?
- Posted by All Things Mopar on February 4th, 2006
This seems deceptively simple, but I can't figure it out...
I run Win XP Pro SP2 and would simply like to add a Shortcut to
the Search function in XP's Start Menu, but I cannot get a
right-click menu for Search and searching for "search" to find
the command name showed no results.
How can I do this? Thanks.

On the start menu, click-and-drag the Search to the desktop.

Left click it and drag it to the desktop.

click on Search and try to drag to the Desktop. A "regular" menu
item, for which there's an entry in the Start menu in Explorer
can be dragged the way you describe, but I can't get that to
work for Search.
What simple-but-fumble-fingered-thing am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Please see my other reply post. When I try what 2 people
suggest, no-thing happens, i.e., no "ghost" icon being dragged
to the Desktop shows and nothing gets copied.

request and looked at the keyboard shortcuts, but I must've been
too blind to see this one.

Then there is something wrong with your system, because it works fine here
when I do that.

I love it how questions somehow eventually wind up with "your
system is hosed". I just tried the suggestion you and 2 others
have made on my older Win XP Pro SP1 box, and it doesn't work
the way it has been described, either. And, yes, both systems
/are/ setup to allow drag and drop. Incidently, there's no
right-click menu where there'd be a "Copy", or I'd have done
that a long time ago.
The /only/ items I can drag and drop from the Start menu are
those that are actually /in/ the Start Menu, as seen by right-
click Start>Properties>Customize>Advanced. The "system"
tools/functions that are in the Start Menu are ususally part
of something else, for example, I know that Search is part of
Win Explorer. Hence, there ain't nothing to drag and drop.
Before I posted this earlier today, I also investigated the
available command line switches for Explorer, but didn't see
anything that does what I want. Oh, well, life's too short for
this. I could've used my mouse to get to Search 1,000 times by
now for the amount of time I've wasted trying to "solve" my
own problem...

Just found why 3 people can use drag and drop and I can't - I'm
using the Classic Menu! I briefly turned on the default XP Start
menu, dragged Search to the Desktop, then turned Classic back
on.
Thanks to those who replied.

WinKey-F will get you there.
Also, once you perform the search you can Save it. Its parameters
will then be preloaded, but overwritable.
But I suggest you install the likes of yahoo desktop search. far
faster, more configurable.

Thanks, Paul. I'll checkout Yahoo Desktop Search.
Incidently, to avoid confusion, I left out a detail - what I
/really/ wanted to do was to add Search to the Start folder so
it would automatically launch each time I restarted XP. I have
it now, as I accidently discovered that my insistance on using
the Classic Menu hides some new XP functionality. Duh! <grin>

Simple.
Change the start menu from "Classic" to "normal" XP, then drag the search
icon to anywhere you like...
The above is the only way I know of doing it!
The shortcut command is
&Search
If you really want to know, but it won't help.

Thanks, bigjon. I discovered this accidently about 3 or so
hours ago. My problem was that I was (and am) running Classic.
I'm golden now.
Nope, don't need to know that! <grin>
But, I am curious about one thing on my new shortcut - why
won't the blinking Search function obey how I have the launch
window set? No matter if it is set to Minimize, Normal Window,
or Maximized, it always comes up in a small window. I think
this is one of the Windows imponderables, which a supreme
marketer like Bill Gates shoulda fixed long ago.

I believe the best solution for that is not to use maximize, but set your
window size manually. Close all windows and programs, then open the search
window only. click on the title bar and move it to the top left of your
screen. Then click on the bottom right window corner and drag it to the
bottom right of your screen. Close it. When you re-open it, it should be the
size you set it at.

Works exactly the same on Home.
