- HP Pavilion 6330 -- Adding RAM
- Posted by Daave on September 7th, 2005
I just started working at a nonprofit organization. It's a great job in
almost every way, however the PC just isn't cutting it!
It's a HP Pavilion 6330 (running Windows 98). It only has 64 MB of RAM
(DIMM). What I would like to do is double this.
According to specs, the PC has a 64MB stick in Memory Bank 0, with
nothing in Memory Bank 1. Its speed is 66 MHz/10 ns SDRAM (I don't know
what the "10 ns" refers to). There are two 168-pin sockets.
I figured I could just install another stick like the one currently in
it. Does this sound doable?
Do I need to upgrade the BIOS, too? If so, how I would do this?
Thanks in advance.

According to the specifications on the HP site :-
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...lc=en#Memor y
you can install 16, 32, 64, or 128Mb DIMMS so you should be able to
take it to 256MB total (remove the 64 and add 2x 128MB DIMMS). This
machine will ONLY use 66MHz/10ns SDRAM.
The 66MHz is the speed of the RAM, the 10ns is the response time SDRAM
is the type of memory chip used and the DIMM is the physical
architecture of the RAM stick, so what you would need to ask for is
(for example) a 128MB 66MHz/10ns SDRAM DIMM.
You should not have to update the BIOS but you may need to enter the
BIOS so the machine recognises the new RAM (some older machines need
you to access the BIOS and then save and exit so the new settings are
recognised.
You may have difficulty getting this old RAM but if there is a computer
refurbisher or recycler near you you may be able to purchase second
hand RAM from them.

It will hold up to 256mb.

Upgrade the K6-II 300 to a 500 K6-II or K6-III ($10 on ebay), memory to
256mb and 98 to XP. It will then perform similar to a 'new' PC.
