The new MB will have two IDE adapters at best or only one at worst, for
CD/DVD. If you mean you have "lined up" an adapter to convert the drive to
SATA, your hard drive performance won't change much. The IDE drives will
perform better on an IDE channel but the difference in speed with a
conversion to SATA will be almost imperceptible.
As for how the adapter plugs in, it depends on the adapter. Most plug
directly into the IDE drive and you run the SATA cable to the SATA port.
