IE v6 on XP-Pro-SP2 won't render .mht documents - why?
Posted by hummingbird on August 26th, 2005

Help appreciated...
I save a lot of webpages in the form of x.mht for reading later or
keeping on my HDD etc. IE allows this as an alternative to saving in
..html format which can be messy and often splits up the content
into multiple folders etc.

Since I've installed XP-Pro SP2, I cannot get IE (or Avant) to render
my huge collection of .mht docs - IE/Avant just sit there and do
nothing. I have the .mht file association set ok I think.

I gather .mht stands for 'Mime HTML' but that doesn't add to my
overall knowledge of what's wrong.

Is there an XP Service which is needed for this? which maybe I've
turned off? Is there some other setting I've not noticed?

It's a complete mystery...

I am making a guess but perhaps this may help

On my machine (win2k) the is the following registry value for Internet

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Default MHTML Editor

See Symptom 7 in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887797

Or see this article for possible help:

Bullshit they were. You've got HTML components blocked in OE. Tools >

Yes, it affects IE, and it affects an awful lot of other software as well.
It also prevents many links from being clicked in OE.

The problem is, the MS "security" kludge is completely rooted, so once it's
set, your HTML may never behave the same again. Try turning it off, but you
run the risk of identifying your mail address to spammers if they use coded
images. If that doesn't work, your only options are to try and change the
application associated with MHTML to a more useable browser, or get used to
using File > Open.

Avant won't work because it's based entirely on OE.

Using file/open doesn't work ...already tried it.

If I understand you correctly, I have to run OE for the first time
and check the settings to sort out this security kludge so I can view
..mht docs in IE or Avant! ...You couldn't make this up ;;--))

Can this not be done by fiddling with the registry?

I have OE on my machine since I installed XP-Pro-SP2 new several weeks
ago, but I've never even run it because I never wanted to use it, so
whatever settings it has, I'm not aware of.When I say installed I mean
there is a folder "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express" and a link in the
Start Menu to 'msimn.exe' in the OE folder. I assume it will start if
I click it. I use Agent for e-mail and usenet ...gave up on OE on my
previous machine running XP-Pro-SP1.

But faster...

Bad news I'm afraid. I ran OE and unckecked the box about HTML,
rebooted the machine and nothing changed. I've since discovered that
IE kick-starts the 'IE crash detection' module each time I try to load
an .mht document and tries to call home - wherever home is.
