Installing Sound Card
Posted by Emrys Davies on November 23rd, 2004

I have win98 SE, OE6 and IE6

I have installed a Sound Card 5.1 - 6 Channel PCI by www.sweex.com
but I am having real difficulty when I try to install the driver for the
product.

The manual says:

"Driver installation for Windows 95 / 98 / Me and for Windows 2000

Select the Start-menu and subsequently click on 'execute'. Now enter
the following command: X:\setup.exe and press enter". This has fooled
me completely. I got nowhere. Never heard of 'execute'.

If I go to D:\ in My Computer I am able to install Appliances and Driver
separately, but after pressing Install with regards to the driver I get
the following request:

"Relevant system files of Windows 98/98SE may be needed during
installation. You may specify the path now, or do it later when being
asked.
Please specify the path and press continue to install".

Having browsed, I inserted C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM as the path, but this was
not accepted and I was not allowed to proceed any further.

Just in case, I also tried D:\win_98SE\drv (which was in the Address
Bar) and many variations of it, again without success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would prefer to proceed via Start as it appears from the graphics that
I would be able to install Applications and the Device Driver from
there, in one go.

Thanks,
Emrys Davies.

Start, run, browse, click on the driver install file, open,
The file and path should appear in the run box,
OK.

For the cdrom path, point to the win98 folder on the cd.

You sound card will not work because of the way you have installed it
All I'll say is unsupported device)
take PC and card back to where you brought it
unlikely that person in shop will fix the error that has been created
ask for different brand and pay for them to install it

Well, success and it was so simple now that I know.

I could not get Internet music on my sound card so I bought the new one
on the understanding that it could be returned (with a credit) if it was
not an improvement on mine.

The performance of both cards was equal in as much that they only
produced music from a CD Rom.

Then, by chance, I read about the importance of setting Multimedia to
the Preferred Device and having done that the problem was solved and now
I have plenty of music and a £10 credit.

Thanks.

Have a look at your software--start>progs and remove anything that was
installed associated with previous card.
Device manager--uninstall anything to do with your card.
reboot
Should it be an on-board item--boot to your bios and disable.
reboot--hey result no x card found etc
turn off machine
insert card
reboot
let windows find things(ok it will probably screw up)
insert cd provided if prompted--if not insert and run setup once windows has
loaded--visit manufacturer site and update all drivers and software
reboot
should be job done

"Timberwolf",

I find that most helpful and thanks a lot, but for further reference how
should I have followed the guidance from the manual. Would you kindly
walk me through it as it failed me, to say the least.

I certainly found the 'D' path, having browsed from the Start menu and
consequently the 'Applications' and 'Driver', but the following was not
to be seen and completely fooled me.

"The manual says:

"Driver installation for Windows 95 / 98 / Me and for Windows 2000

Select the Start-menu and subsequently click on 'execute'. Now enter
the following command: X:\setup.exe and press enter".

Thanks,
Emrys Davies.

To execute something is to run it. Start-menu and run type in your command
or WinKey+R

english via a few other languages

I think the wordage should be:
click start
select run
enter command line(type this in in the little box) X:setup.exe then
press enter the X denotes your cd /dvd drive where you have placed the
supplied disc

make sense?

"Timberwolf"

It makes sense until I enter that path in run and then I get the usual
'Cannot find the file.......' error window.

My interest in this has waned somewhat since I got things working, but
in future before I buy a sound card I will go through this jargon with a
technician before I commit myself and I will probably contact
www.sweex.com to see what they say, although that might be to tedious.

Creative Labs have shown great interest. They have requested details of
nearly all of the data on my sound card so that they can point me to an
update should one be available after five years or more.

Thanks a lot.
Emrys Davies.
