- invisible RAM
- Posted by Mike on October 4th, 2004
I have two PC 2100 256mb DIMMs. Each one will work by itself in my computer,
but when I install both at the same time only the one in the first slot is
used. Sandra 2004 sees it and says the other two slots are empty. One of the
DIMMs is a Nanya and two years old the other is a Crucial I picked up about
two weeks ago. The motherboard is an Asus A7V8X-X with an Athlon 2000+.
Any suggestions?
TIA
Mike

I don't understand. My old Compaq has 3 64mb PC100 sticks from 3
manufacturers and all 3 work perfectly.

Go into your BIOS and change the ram timing to a slower or not as
agressive timings (Select CAS 3 instead of CAS 2, usually a higher
number in the choices is slower).
Perhaps get the free program called Everest Home Edition and see what
the ram timing are for each stick.
This ram info will be found in Computer,Summary in Everest.
Perhaps your ram is too different to work together.
BTW, how many slots do you have for your memory?
Have you tried to use the second and third slots?
Have you emailed the motherboard or computer mfg for help?
Try posting in the Asus Motherboard newsgroup.

Some motherboards are very particular with mixing different ram
sticks.

As Winston suggested, you should try flashing the BIOS to the LATEST
version for your motherboard.
I believe it is 1013
Be sure to read the directions carefully and follow them exactly if
you decide to flash the BIOS.
BIOS ver 10 had something about fixing:
"Patch for Samsung M368L6423 / M368L3223 DRAM
Solve PS/2 keyboard sometimes become abnormal after entering Windows."

Thanks, keyboard issue would've been my next question.
