When a disaster strikes, any where in the world, our first reaction is to send help, support and money. When Christmas arrives, we celebrate, give gifts to family and friends, spend and give money all around. When someone in particular is in need, we normally turn our head and look the other way. Often our first reaction is "if he needs money, he only has to do like us: go to work". But have you ever thing that it might happen to you one day? In this Holiday period, let me tell you a small story
Once upon a time there was this family of 5. The dad, that we will call Pierre is now 55 years old, married to Danielle, and father of 5 children. Around 10 years ago, while, like most of us, he was enjoying life and family. Always available to his family and friends. He was always the first to volunteer, even if it required canceling his own projects.
Suddenly and without previous notice, he had heart problems. A dilated cardiomyopathy was detected and also severe arrhythmia causing loss of conscience. A defibrillator was implanted. He was than still able to perform some of his work, but had to reduce many activities.
Slowly over the years the situation degraded. Pierre became unable to perform full weeks of work. In May 2003, he was ordered to stop working and stop driving a car. He was by now taken 10 different medications, fewof them with strong side effect. But this was the price to pay to keep living. Unfortunately, Pierre did not have long-term salary insurance and because of his heart condition was not eligible to any type of personal insurance. So the family started to use the money put away for retirement to survive. Pierre, being too proud to ask for help, cheats on doctor prescription and undertook some small contracts within and sometime over his physical capacities.
In July 2004, not feeling well, the doctors investigate again and find that Pierre now have problem with his thyroid gland. The problem was directly cause by one of my medication called Amioderone (Cordarone). Pierre was than facing 2 choices either stopping Amioderone and suffering more severe arrhythmia attack or taking a new medication over and above hisactual 10 drugs. He decided to take that new medication and to live with the new restriction cause by the thyroid gland. Amioderone has also and other unpleasant side effect. His eye view went from 30/40 to less that 20/40 after correction with glasses.
He was than totally unable to work and needed someone to stay with him. So Danielle, his dear wife quit her part-time job. The family became totally without revenues. It didn't take too long that retirement money was gone. The family maximized the use of credit cards, credit margins, briefly anywhere they were able to get legally money. Even the children support financially. Every penny was use to survive.
In November 2005, feeling dizzy, Pierre went back to the hospital, expecting that it was again side effect of medication. Instead, he learned, after few tests, that I had advanced cancer and because of his heart condition, there is not much to be done.
November was definitely not this family's month. Over and above his health situation, the bank notify them that they had until January 8 2006 tobring my mortgage up to date ($9,948.76) otherwise they will take the house back. Copy of that letter was also send to the city and now they are after their $5,746.29 of taxes that that was not paid because lack ofrevenues and the city now wants to seize the house by early 2006. The power company also want their $5428.31 and MasterCard want their $14 420.30
Adding up with the other small amounts due left and right the family needs a little over $38,696.07 plus all the monthly purchases of medication. This year will be a very sad Christmas for this family and 2006 does not look too bright either.
The family is now on welfare support and totaling revenues of $1085.49 per month, which is the maximum allowance from welfare. For the first time in Pierre's life, this year instead of giving to food bank for Christmas, he will be on the list of receiver. That is tough on the ego. Whatdid they do wrong in the past? They all believe in God, there is plenty of love in the family, all members are always available to help others. What else did they miss?
A friend in need is a friend indeed as we normally say. Unfortunately, we are not friends but total strangers. Should that make a difference?
It is a coincidence that all of this arrives around Christmas time, time of the year your are solicited by everyone and every organization to help. And here we have this desperate family popping up from nowhere and asking for your help and sympathy. What can you do to help them?
