- lack of sync
- Posted by philo on November 28th, 2005
i've never done any audio/visual's before...
but recently got a camera with video capabilites.
when i play avi's
on my AMD-1100 with 640 megs of RAM
there is about a one second lack of sync between audio and video.
(the avi's play normally on several other machines)
i assumed the problem was due to a very lo-end video card
but i replaced it with a GeForce4 and found absolutely no
difference.
the AMD-1100 runs several OS's
and I have the same poor results with win98, win2k , XP or Linux...
using numerous different media players.
i would think an AMD-1100 would be good enough
to play avi's but as an audio/video newbie
i'm a bit stumped.
my mobo is an ASUS A7VI-VM
and i'm using the on-board audio...
if i can't get this thing working right...
i may have to retire the machine and use a spare p-IV
i;ve got

Hi Philo.
Avi's as a format are crap.Always have been,always will.
Semi Intel/Indigo cludge of codecs and have been well surpassed.
Anyway as it's machine specific then I suspect it's merely a
driver/DirectX problem.
You didn't say what O/S(Naughty Naughty, you should know better ;-)
Update video card drivers.
Re-install/update mother board AGP driver pack if AGP card and if
required for PCI card.
Update/re-install sound card drivers.
Update/re-install DirectX
above for starters.
Clean registry before during and after all of the above.

i'm a total newbie when it comes to anything audio/video
the AVI's play just fine on an AMD-2200 and a P-IV 1600 i've got
in the house...so even if AVI's are bad...I know they at least work
on the other machines...
i really hate to retire my trusty amd-1100
but maybe it's time...
it's only got a 200mhz FSB and 4x AGP

Do you think it might help to convert it to another format?

Fedora Core3 , Ecom Station, Vector Linux and Xandros
just to name a few...
and not a one can play an AVI properly...
that's why i'm sure it's hardware...

well i did try the .rp format
and it seems to be in sync...
but it's a very compressed format...so i'll try an mpeg next...
btw: this video editing stuff is a whole new world...
i have to use finer resolution on my monitor...
and it looks like my monitor is really a bit too small...
so for me to get into video it looks like i'll have to replace not only my
computer (which i already have plenty of) ...
but also my monitor which i'd have to go out and buy !!!!
well...i may be putting this whole thing on hold for a while

Yeah - I hear that! I bought a TV card for the PC, to use it as a DVR. I
wanted to get full seasons of my favorite shows, edit out the commercials,
and save them on DVD. Right. What a PITA. I gave up real quick <g> (It
wasn't worth my time.)

Yes...
sometimes it's too much trouble...
but i tend to be stubborn...
anyway i converted the avi to an mpg and the mpg works!!!!
so maybe for the time being i can live with that...
but will sooner or later be forced to upgrade...
since i got into computers in july of 1999
i'm proud to say i;ve used nothing but the finest of surplus/discarded
junk!!!
so i've spent close to nothing on all this ...
but of course...the girlfriend has all the good stuff!!!
but even that is still pretty obsolete by today's standards
(don't mention that to her)

Heh heh heh! I know *just* how you feel. For the last 8 or 10 years, each PC
was built from spare parts, upgraded one piece at a time. But this year, I
bought a fairly current model (refurbished <g>) with a P4 3GHz HT CPU. So
cool! But my camera, scanner, printer etc. were all obsolete when I bought
them (all refurbished except the scanner - a closeout model.) Yesterday I
bought a new display. HP 19" LCD. Not the newest technology either, but
still way cool

I am so darn lucky...
maybe it's because I live near a university...but I find dozens
of machines every year within easy walking distance of my house.
my best find was an older p-IV that was half assembled and never
completed!!!!
Anyway thanks to the person who responded (below) I can
keep my present machine in place for a while longer!
btw: it's built into an old gateway-2000 486Dx2-66 tower...
it looks great!

Outstanding! I recently got a system with a Celeron 2.4GHz that was missing
RAM and drives. The kid had bought a new case/mobo/cpu and this was the
leftovers after a rebuild. No problem - my spare parts cabinet covered that
very nicely. I gave it to Mom for her birthday
Yup - I have an old PII from Gateway that had been through an office fire.
Rather discolored, so I painted it black. Can't tell - looks great. Plenty
of room inside. Right now it's on the giveaway shelf - know anyone who needs
a PII? <g>

a few years back i was happy to find a p-1 being discarded...
now p-III's and Celeron's are very common in the discard bin!
Well I actually have two of those large gateway towers...
the 2nd one is my backup machine...an amd-550.
btw: I had to heavily modify the case of my main machine
to get an atx board into an AT case

5.5'. We lost millions of dollars worth of communications equipment. Long
