Laptop DVD-RW busted - Help!!
Posted by k. janus on February 11th, 2005

hi all,

dumb question but I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere with zero
entertainment. Have a brand-new laptop, Compaq 3320CA. Was sick in
bed and using the dvd player excessively to watch mpeg's & dvd movies
on disc.

In the middle of a movie, the picture froze and now the drive refuses
to read anything, be it cd's, data discs, movies or anything. Gives
me message "No Data on D:"

I have no idea if it's physically broken somehow, or perhaps I need to
reinstall? The computer cannot access the Net at present (I am on
another computer now), so can't update drivers that way. But drivers
should be up-to-date since comp is new, and everything was working
fine before. But I can't reload them manually since the drivers are
on a cd.

Any advice? Should I uninstall the disc drive in Device Manager and
restart, hoping it will recognize and reload properly? or does this
look like a busted drive which should be taken for repair (possible,
it is under warranty but I am in New Zealand where things are not
easily done). any help is appreciated, thank you in advance!

Though it might be different for your specific brand, you might be able to
manually eject the drive and insert it again. This might correct the error.
After that, you could uninstall the drivers and restart. You should have
windows XP and it should automatically recognize the drive. If it doesn't,
you'll just have to wait until you can get a hold of the CD.
