Anyone ever replace the backlight in an LCD monitor? Is it very difficult if
you haven't done it before?

AFAIK Sharp is the only manufacturer whose LCD monitor design
specifically allows for user backlight replacement. I am sure it
could be done with other brands, but with a LOT more trouble and
probably voiding the warranty. It's a fairly delicate operation
I would imagine.

Also, either way, it's not a cheap proposition.

How long have you had your LCD monitor? The backlight should
last for a good few years before you notice any fading etc.

The monitor is in its 6th year and is out of warranty. It still comes on,
but the screen is black unless I shut off the power to the monitor and then
turn it back on, then I can see the display for a split second.

I am not an expert on LCD monitors, just happened to know that
about the Sharp models.

Still, does the display appear "normal" when it flashes on for a
sec? It might be a faulty power supply (there are probably more
than one in the unit) or something, not the backlight. I'd
suggest you have it checked by a reliable shop or perhaps post a
question to the manuf. web site.

Considering the age of the monitor, the backlight replacement
will probably cost more than a new monitor ("they" usually do
NOT lower replacement part prices no matter how cheap the new
products get).

Personally, I MUCH prefer the good old CRT to the LCD's. I've
had a 15" Sony CRT for over 9 years, still looks like the day I
first turned it on. I don't think Sony even makes CRT computer
monitors any more. But Samsungs are supposed to be quite good.

Good luck.

Yes.

Look at this: http://www.ccfldirect.com

I like CRTs for their reliability but one that is big enough for me to see
without strain, I cannot lift!

It could well be the inverter module , that lives in the in the lid. it acts
like a starter in a fluorescent tube, this would be relatively cheap to fit.
