- Log on procedure
- Posted by Michael Washington on February 5th, 2005
Have a HP 510x computer running xp home edition, the problem is when it
boots up to welcome screen, I am unable to log on when I click owner. It
starts to log on then abruptly says it is logging off. Does anyone have an
idea what could be wrong? Any helpful info would be appreciated.

I had that happen recently -
Boot your computer to the boot menu - press F8 right after the memory test
(keep pressing over and over until it boots). Then from the menu, first try
the "Last Known Good Configuration".
If that doesn't work, then on the same menu you should see something about
the Recovery Console...start that. Read this:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...c_str_bjid.asp
or http://tinyurl.com/29y9c
if the above link is broken
If you don't understand it, ask questions...you don't need any /more/
problems.
Finally, if that doesn't work, you may end up needing to re-install your
system from the HP recovery discs. You can save data from your hard drive
first, but that's another topic for discussion if you get to that point.

If other advice fails http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151
could be your Ntuser.dat or Ntuser.ini is corrupt.

Yup - I looked into that too, but on the computer I was fixing, I was never
able to get Windows to boot in any mode. But I've done the new profile thing
on other computers before - really does help!

Not booting up is a different matter, booting to log-in, then log'g off
is a security thing.
The OS see's something isn't right (hack'd?) most likely with the
profile and won't let you in.
(to OP)
Most people install an OS then use the Admin account, it's really
important to create a different account and use that one, Then you have
a backdoor in for times like this.

That would W2K or XP Pro, IIRC. All the installs of XP Home I've done
default to a user account with an admin acct only available in safe mode.
But the OP didn't even provide that much info <g>
