- Mass storage driver - Not working?
- Posted by Eos on December 25th, 2004
I connected a digicam (Sony P93) to my PC and it said in the 'blurb' which
came with the camera to either install the driver on the CD or just use Win
XP's 'own' driver as this would work too. Well, as it turned out, none of
these suggestions worked. I installed...'I uninstalled...'and rebooted 12
times too....'no sign of any camera installed though!
I then tried my camera on my son's PC which runs Win XP as well, but this
time it couldn't have been easier as all I did was connect the camera to the
USB port, and it appeared in Windows Explorer as a 'small hard drive'. I was
struck dumb! How is it that it works on his machine, but on mine, it just
doesn't want to 'know' the camera? (Win XP does name the camera as a DSC,
but that's all). It mentioned a 'Mass Storage Driver', so is there a way to
test if I have this installed properly or not? It's all very strange and
getting more crazy by the minute. Any suggestions are most welcome.
Merry Xmas all!

you installed the latest XP service packs on you PC? Have you done a clean
install of XP without installing motherboard drivers?
If you right click on My Computer, click on manage then click on device
manager. A list of devices will appear - is there one called Universal
Serial Bus controllers? If not, you don't have the USB drivers installed.

It was a year ago so I am a bit dim on the details but I went to plug a new
digital camera in to my xp based laptop and it did not see the camera as a
drive but my desktop with xp did. Turns out I installed some driver for usb
storage device and it worked. Why it was not part of the install of XP on
the laptop I do not know.

I have recently done a clean install of Win XP, but what exactly is a
'motherboard driver'? Do I need one? I checked device manager and the USB
controllers are listed. My printer and webcam are USB devices and work okay.
There is a driver for the Sony camera on CD, but it says it's only needed
for Win98/ME/NT, and not necessary for XP. I have installed it....'camera
doesn't show....'uninstalled it...'camera still doesn't show. More to the
point, device manager says there's no driver installed, even when I install
the driver from the Sony CD. I shouldn't really need a driver if I'm using
XP, which I am, so I am totally perplexed. The new hardware wizard pops up
as soon as I connect the camera, but it will not install it. The driver is
actually an EXE file on the CD and simply unzips a copy of the driver to a
folder called c:\sony\drivers, and when I point the wizard to the folder, it
says 'no driver found'.
Any advice anyone?

Thanks, but do you know where I might get hold of this driver which you
used?
