Medical Spam
Posted by Bob B on December 7th, 2003

Some medical spammers seem to have got hold of my email address .....they
always repeat their mail 3 times ... Mailwasher picks them up it wants to
bounce and delete them ...should I let this happen or should I foreward them
as abuse or just delete them ...another thought is not to let Mailwasher
stop them but use a rule in outlook express which stops them being
downloaded from the server ... I would welcome which method is the best to
use ..Bob...please reply to the group as my hotmail address is set at 'safe'

If you are sure that it's of no use to you (let's face it 99.999999%
isn't) set up Mailwasher to delete BUT don't bounce.
Problem solved...

Do *not* use the bounce feature in MailWasher. All you
are doing is clogging up (potentially) some poor, innocent
mail server - the majority of spam mail has forged headers.
Just delete them from the server with MW.

Sadly, MailWasher bounces Spam back to the *forged* originating address in
the "From" field, and not to the true source of the message. I've resorted
to using MailWasher to pre-view my email at the server when I first go
online for the day, and then deleting but not bouncing all Spam. After
that, I shut down MailWasher, and report any Spam that comes in after that
to SpamCop. It makes me feel like I'm on the offensive in some small way,
although it doesn't seem to be having any effect on the volume of Spam I'm
receiving. Still, I keep reporting it all as it comes in as a duty to
mankind.

Most of the Spam I receive is filtered automatically into my Delete file but
it still bugs me that it's coming in in the first place. It is nice to know
that the crap is being fired into the bin, though. I'm using the filtering
recommendations here to achieve this:

Ian.

Many thank for all your replies ...have set my Mailwasher to delete (its
quicker than bouncing anyway) ... Bob

I would forward it to Spamcop and then delete.
