Missing Mail Icon in Control Panel
Posted by M. K. on December 26th, 2005

I am running Windows XP Home version and when I opened the Control Panel I
found that the Mail Icon is missing. Is there a way to recover it? If
possible could someone give me instructions how to do that?
Thanks for any and all help.

What mail icon? There's no "mail" icon in Control Panel. What are you trying
to do?

I don't know what such a CP item is for in XP, but in W98 it is
associated with the installation of the old W95 fax elements, which
requires that there be a MAPI client, such as windows messaging wms.exe.

When I installed the W95 wms.exe, I got a MS mail postoffice and its
elements so that I could install and work the W95 fax awfax.exe. When I
open the Mail icon CP, I find the properties of the items which are
attached to that windows messaging system, such as the fax and the
oldstyle addressbook, ie mailbox.pab

I have one in mine as well - for Outlook Profiles, email accounts and
data files. Not something that the average user would notice to miss.
So I think Toolman Tim asks the right question - What is it that you
are actually trying to do? Is someting else not working and someone
told you to go here?

But as you've probably realized by now, it doesn't belong to XP - it's
installed by Outlook. If the OP doesn't have Outlook, he won't have the icon
either. My guess is he has Outlook at work, and OE at home.
