Mouse problem.
Posted by Extracoconut on April 13th, 2006

Hi

Hope someone can help.

The mouse on a friend's computer has just stopped working.

Their kid was "speaking" to a friend using MSN Messenger and all of sudden,
I am told, the cursor no longer responded to mouse movements.
He wasn't accepting any files...not downloading anything.

I had a brief look this afternoon and couldn't find anything to suggest what
the problem was.

They borrowed a new mouse (after I'd gone home!) and replaced it. Same
response though....cursor appears, but stays where it is despite moving the
mouse.

I have, over the phone, got them to do an earlier system restore. This was
completed correctly but the cursor still doesn't move.

Any ideas?

I do have one but this will have to wait till I go back tomorrow...

When I was there I had a look at the Device Manager and I didn't see a mouse
listed. Didn't think a great deal about this at first, thought perhaps that
mice are shown here, but just checked mine and it's there, under "Human
Interface Devices".

Perhaps this is the problem? For some reason it's been removed from the
Device Manager and just needs to be refreshed...(but why didn't this happen
upon reboot?)
Odd.

Anyone?

Chris

Try a different KIND of mouse - substitute a USB for a PS2 or vice versa.
That will narrow it down somewhat...

Okay, update....

Works fine with a USB mouse.

Strange happening though, take the USB mouse out and the PS2 mouse and
reboot.

Computer boots to the XP login screen and the mouse cursor is STILL there?
There is no mouse attached so why is there is a cursor?

Looked in BIOS and nothing awry.

In Device Manager, there is no mouse attached and nothing found when "scan
for hardware changes".

Seems like the PS2 connector on the mobo is "broken". Unless anyone knows
differently...

Chris.

That is typical. Even if the computer boots up and asks "Where's the mouse?"
(Well, that's not quite what it says*) the cursor is still there. Windows
can use the cursor with the arrow keys if it is configured for that.

*In W9x, if you started the PC without a mouse, a dialog would appear saying
something like "Windows has not detected a mouse. Plug in a serial mouse at
this time, or press enter to continue".

Broken, quite possible since it does have power on the circuit. If a mouse
shorted out the wiring (bad mouse cord) it might damage the mouse port on
the motherboard.

Another possibility is the interrupt has been 'stolen' by another device,
although that would be highly unlikely since it is a reserved interrupt and
no-one should be writing drivers that would want to use it.
