- MS Word 97 problem
- Posted by SD on March 5th, 2005
I accidently opened an MS Word document in 'Word Notepad' and the text came
up all gibberish. I can't now open this file in MSWord and was hoping
someone could enlighten me as to how I can undo my error or have I lost this
file for good?

You need to give a bit more information. What do you mean by "Can't now
open this file in MSWORD"? Do you get an error message, in which case what
is it? And while I'm assuming that the file originally had the file
extension .doc, what does it have now?
Also, when you opened the file in "Word Notepad" (do you mean Notepad.exe?),
did you then close it without saving, or did you save it and close Notepad?

If this is a doc file, you can change its association back. In XP, do a
single mouse right key-click on the file. In the dialog box, select Open
With... (or the equivalent) There should be another dialog box that allows
you to select the program to use. Make sure that there is a check-mark where
it says to use this software all the time. Press Ok to confirm.
If you are using Win98, (going from memory), highlight the file with one
right key-click of the mouse. Hold the shift key, and press the right mouse
key. In the dialog box, it should allow you to click on the prompt Open
With... The rest is the same, as above.
