- MS Word problem
- Posted by Stevo65 on March 26th, 2006
Every time I open an application, it asks me if I want to save it, whether I
have changed anything or not. There must be a setting that I have
accidentally enabled. an anyone assist?

I assume when you write "application" you mean document. Does it happen
for all documents, or only specific ones, and does Word ask you to save
the document, or is it the template (usu. "Normal.dot")?
It could be a field that changes automatically, like "last opened
date/-time", link/lookup from other files (DDE) or some calculation
field. (If that is in your template, it will affect all new documents.)
Automatic lookup/recalculation may mark the document as "dirty"
(=changed) even if nothing appears to have changed.

I suggest you might have acquired a macro virus -- and it is trying to
infect your documents from your normal.dot template.
Check the macros available to see if there is one present. You may try
opening the normal.dot template as well, separately.

That one is correct - Excel recalculates formulas when it opens files from
an older version, I think so it can check to see if there are errors. I
don't think Word does anything like that though. And the OP didn't even
bother to state which application/documents/files he is having this issue
with.

Sorry,of course I meant documents & not applications. It does this with
every document I open. I get the feeling that there is a setting somewhere
that is automatically adding a date but i cant find it in the footer or
header. Any suggestions?

Every document you open in WHAT? In Word? Excel? Your CAD program? Some
other program? All programs? I've never seen this happen in ALL programs. As
far as I know, there is NO setting that can globally tell ALL programs to
ask if you want the file saved when you exit. But many programs do that on
their own. My CAD program for instance does that, and there is no setting to
turn it off.

Never mind. You said Word in the SUBJECT line. Next time, it would help if
you include that in the MESSAGE as well. The subject is not where you should
put the question parameters.
Did you look at the settings at Tools, Options, Save tab? Perhaps you have
it set to Always create backup copy. That might be causing this - I don't
use Word (in fact, I despise Word) so I can't say for sure.

OK, sorry.
Yep, nothing unusual ticked. It is only with a few documents, cant see
anything in the body or header/footer such as a date that would make it ask
me to save every time open the doc.

Now, wait a minute. First you said (it's still quoted, above) "It does
this with every document I open". That was after you figured out that
documents weren't applications. Now you say "It is only with a few
documents". Which of your personalities is telling the truth?

Yes, I thought it was every document, because it was doing it with
everything I was using at the time. However I have since created a couple of
test docs which open and close as expected. Any suggestions?

1) save the documents with a new name and try them again
2) cut/paste the data into a NEW document, close the original, save it and
try again
