- multiple partitions in RAID 0 array?
- Posted by Peter on October 16th, 2007
I plan to setup a RAID 0 array using 2 identical 400GB drives with multiple
partitions (for instance; 60GB for system and 2 x 180 for data). If the
system partition crashes will it affect the data partitions too? I searched
the web and came up with nothing, so if anyone can tell me how multi
partitions act in a RAID 0 array would be appreciated. My OS is Win XP pro,
RAID controllers on DFI Lanparty mainboard.
Thnx

Well the whole idea is wrong in the first place, unless the data is temp
working files you can lose as well. Remember RAID 0 has no data
security, 1 drive fails it's all gone, doesn't matter about partitions
then.
You can lose a partition without affecting another, however as both are
in the same partition table, think about that.
Same as if on 1 disk with the normal risk of disk failure, just more so.
A spare mobo of the same exact model would be handy, generally with RAID
you need the same controller in case of HW failure. Putting the drives
on a different controller may make the data inaccessable as well.
For this readon I prefer a cheap PCI Adapte card and buy 2 at the same
time. Depends on how much your data is worth.
