My icons have corrupted..please can you help?
Posted by simpaul@hotmail.co.uk on April 14th, 2006

Hello all.
I have a problem with my icons. Although they all work fine
with no error messages. The display of them are all the same. They look
like the fruit machine look that you sometime see when you don't have a
application to run them. Hope you know what I mean by that. I'm sure
there is a proper term for this display. The only thing I think has
done this is my adware removal program. It seems as if something as
been deleted in the registry that should not of been. So now all my
music and videos all show this same "fruit machine" look. I've tried
the open with and always use this program, but it does not change the
look of the actual icon. I'm guessing people must of had this problem
before and hoping someone can help me with the solution. Can you me
please?
Thank you.

windows xp pro sp2
3.2 ghz cpu 400fsb
1024 ddr ram
x700 video card.

I don't know if this will work for XP, but in Win98SE, you can delete the
file called shelliconcache in the Window folder and this will repair all
your icons.

If you don't mind installing a program to fix the issue, Microsoft PowerToys
for Windows XP has an option to repair icons, as well as an option to
customize their appearance. The program also has many other settings
tweaks, which are quite useful. It can be found here:

You can go to the Microsoft site, and download TweakUI. There is an older
type, and an XP version available. In this tool, there is a repair option
for the the icon cache file. I found this to work very well for XP and NT.

If you are using Win95, Win98, or ME, you can delete the file called
shelliconcache. On the re-start, Windows will rebuild a new one.

If that didn't work, you may want to try another program called ActiveIcons.
It also gives the option to repair corrupted icons. It also allows you to
change the icon to another icon of your choosing.

You can download from the MS site a utility called TweakUI. In this
utility there should be a function to repair the icons.
