Need help understanding the chkdsk /f command
Posted by Radioactive Romeo on February 29th, 2004

I got a message on my computer screen as I was starting defrag on my
Windowx XP box, saying my c: drive is corrupted and that I should run
chkdsk /f to scan and fix any errors. But it didn't say anything about
how to do it.

Would I need to boot off a Win9x boot disk and run chkdsk /f that way,
or can I just open up a command prompt from my Windows XP desktop and
run it that way? Hope someone in here can help - I tried googling a
solution, but came up with bupkus.

'chkdsk' can be run from an XP-command-prompt, it will most likely tell you
that drive is in use and do you want shedule it to run on next reboot.
Alternately, from within XP, the same job can be done by right-clicking the
drive, selecting 'Properties, selecting 'Tools' tab, from here thiere is an
'Error Checking' section (and button). 'Automatically fix errors' option
will be the equivalent of the '/f' switch. Again you will be given message
to shedule the test on next reboot.

To see more info on the chkdsk command, open a DOS
window (Start / Run / cmd) and type:

chkdsk /?

You don't need to boot from a floppy.
