Currently running XP Pro Sp2 and run a small network at home.
Over a few beers over xmas & new year a few equally illiterate mates and
myself were wondering about the possibility of networking our computers over
the Internet in such a way that we could play games and utilise the storage
capacity of each others drives yet maintain a degree of individual security.
Is this hypothetical possible and if it is how would we achieve it?

Someone could setup a PC as the game host server, as long an the IP
address is known connecting should not be an issue. Do check your ISP
T&C's / AUP about servers.
Try asking in one of the alt.game.* groups or your ISPs groups.
Isn't this what p2p stuff like Kazza / WinMX do anyway at least partly.
www.google.com try - p2p file sharing
Should not be an issue again , but why? It's much easier to add new
disks.
Depending on the type of access , setting up FTP server simply to
transfer files, safe, simple, standalone accounts and passwords make it
easy. What about system downtime , faults , backup - seems to be more
issues regarding faults / blame if something goes wrong.
Maybe splash out on a NAS box?

You can use Windows XP's built-in vpn server/client.
Remote computers connect to a "server" and become a virtual private network. It
seems as if they were wired together. You can access shared folders, printers,
etc. And you get some encryption to keep things private.
Instructions for setting up vpn server:

Instructions for setting up client(s):

I hope this was helpful.
