as you have 98 & xp home..... firstly who should install lan card &
drivers on both system, then in the properties of network neighborhood
(on desktop) workgoup name you should give same for both the computers,
& a same series ip address (ex.. A-> 192.0.0.1 B-> 192.0.0.2) .
in win98 system you select "clients for microsoft network" in
properties of N/W Nigh'hood to work in lan environment....

you can check the network working or not by pinging one & other ip
addresses on each system........

that's it your Lan now established , then for sharing internet you may
use proxy s/w, first configure that in server pc i.e., xp-home by
giving local ip address,your internet account username & password.,
etc.,

next in 98 in IE-> tools menu-> options -> Lan settings-> specify the
proxy server ip address & port 80.....

that's all...........
