- Networking Problem
- Posted by Charlie on December 5th, 2004
Hi;
I have two computers both running XP Pro. I have them networked. Both
machines are hooked into a wireless router. I can share files on the
machines if I use them both wired or if I have them both unwired but
cant do it if one is wired and one is not. Also I can not connect with
my laptops when the machine is wired because the laptops are wireless.
If I make on of the machines wireless then I can see the laptop with
that machine.
I imagine the question has to be, why wont wired and wireless talk to
each other and what can I do to fix it.
Thanks

It's the protocol being used on the NIC(s). Either uninstall Netbeui off
the NIC's and replace it with NWlink or just leave Netbeui off the NIC's
period..
I run with the following on the NIC(s) between wired and wireless:
1) Clint for MS Network
2) FPS for MS Network
3) QoS Packet Scheduler
4) Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
I use to use NWlink but removed it due to a Linux machine introduced to the
network. I have no problems with sharing resources between the wireless
laptop and the wired desktop machines, including Linux.

Duane;
I added NWlink to the wired network on each computer and now it works.
Thank you for the help

IPX/SPX/NetBIOS compatibility and it now works. (With an unneeded
overhead of another protocol added to the stack and in the wrong order
too).
Might be better to review some network basics and do it right.

The post is made frequently in a wireless NG I frequent. It has to do
with Netbeui is not a routable protocol when WEP is enabled for wireless
and wired connection, at least that's the way it was on my Win 2K
machines at the time. When I went XP Pro, I continued to use NWlink,
until the Linux box the scene and then I started using the above config
on thw NIC's.

@newsread3.news.pas.earthlink.net:
NetBeui over TCP/IP will not work when WEP is enabled on the Linksys
wireless B card is the bottom line. That's the configuration on a Win 2K
machine out of the box and it would not work. Too many people are using
Netbeui and are having the problem even on XP as they post with the
problem.
As a matter of fact, I have a guy I work with who had the configuration
above with the NIC(s) on XP machines on his Linksys wired router network.
In addition implemented Netbeui on the above config on the NIC's and he
couldn't get them to share resources in either case.
The man implemented MS NWlink which is viable protocol that can be used
on a small network situation and BAM it worked for him.
The bottom line here is whatever works.
