I will shortly be upgrading my 98SE (Evesham Technology) to XP and am lookin
for recommendations on which company to purchase from which you consider
good value for money and good after sales service, also companies to avoid.
Have been considering "Dell" but would like to hear what other think.

I've owned several Dells over the years and have been pretty happy with
quality, reliability and performance. Lately though. if you buy from the
Home/Home Office division, your tech support is outsourced to India so it's
hard to understand most of them and many just seem to be reading
troubleshoot tips from a sheet. Also, depending on your state, this division
may or may not collect sales tax -- however all the business divisions do.If
Dell doesn't collect tax in your state, you may not want to save the money
and buy from the small business division instead. Only some of their tech
support is outsourced to India. Also, Dell has started to sell "premium"
tech support for an extra $50-$100. I'm not sure how good it is-- or if its
worth it.
There's a Dell newsgroup that will give you a wide cross section of
opinions-- though remember that company-specific newsgroups tend to attract
a high percentage of bitchers/whiners so you'll need to take what you see
there with a grain of salt.

Thanks Cleburne. Should have said I am in the UK although companies here
also use India helpdesks although I have found some are very good if it is a
basic question and at least they are polite. Bob

If you want an off the shelf machine, the DELL, Compaq, Acer, HP, and IBM
are good. Remember that if you want to expand and add things after, you have
to go to them if you want to have guaranteed support, and compatibility.
Yes... In many instances you can add things yourself, but there will be no
support, and if it effects something of theirs, you will loose more of the
support.
My preference is to build up the machine by choosing the combinations of
things that I want. I like a very generic type of computer, where I can mix
and match how I want things to be. This way, I can put the best of anything
I want.

I would agree, Cleburne. But I beat the sales tax thing. Oregon doesn't have
sales tax, but Tennessee does, so when our company needed a server and 6
workstations in TN, we bought it here in OR and had it 'drop shipped' to TN.
We paid the bill, freight, etc., and then the TN office paid us for the
computers <g>

Bob, If you really want something reliable then you should stay away
from any manufacturer's "consumer line" and instead go for their
"business class" computers. ex. Dell Dimension vs. OptiPlex.
You will find with the current models, that they are slightly slower
than consumer units and slightly more expensive too.
Wonder why?
Because they are better engineered than consumer units! They don't need
to have the latest, fastest bestest they just have to work well. They
also have better long term resale value retention.
You can find used business computers at many computer brokers. You can
try our store if you like for starts. C-Tech however deals mostly with
used & refurbished _ servers _ by HP, Compaq, IBM & DELL we also deal
in Desktops & Laptops and we have tons of parts too.

Good luck :-)

If you are used to EVESHAMs after sales service then you will be hard
pressed to find anyone better.

Bob, I live near a small city and had the local Comp shop put
togeather one for me. They don't add any bell or whistle unless you
want it. They were also helpfully by simply asking what I use the
computer mostly for. If games are the key then the graphic card and
all that pertains is of a premium. They, in my case, orientated mine
to use on the net. They also put on freewware for that purpose.
Secondly, they added "Open Office" to comply to my work usage. I am
not into games so the Graphics aren't that important.
It's rare I have problems and they do have a help line. I have taken
it in for an upgrade on the hardware and they even bought the old
hardware back based on a used price. Perhaps there are such shops
near where you live. Why pay for stuff you don't use!
